Getting Students Active through Safe Routes to School
Policies and Action Steps for Education Policymakers and Professionals
Education policymakers and professionals are a critical partner for Safe Routes to School. But, pressures on budgets, staffing and academic achievement can make it difficult to get involved. To help make the case why educators should become involved in Safe Routes to School, this resource guide provides research linking physical activity and academic achievement, and presents Safe Routes to School as a means of increasing students’ physical activity levels. The guide includes a range policies and action steps supportive of Safe Routes to School that can be implemented at the state, school district and individual school levels—complemented by real-life examples from states and communities across the nation. Our goal is to equip more education policymakers and professionals at all levels with the knowledge and tools necessary to implement and sustain successful Safe Routes to School programs and supportive policies.
